I wrote this Rakchham food and stay review after spending a few days at a beautiful homestay, enjoying super delicious Himachali food, and taking in the experience. Folktales Residency in Rakchham ticked all the right boxes for me: clean rooms, a warm host, and a true feel of home. This Rakchham homestay felt warm and personal, the kind of place you remember long after the trip.
The place had this traditional Himachali architecture that took me down memory lane, reminding me of our family ancestral house. Besides the cozy rooms, what won my heart was the common room and the art space. They had an array of books, fun games, and, to my surprise, a vintage typewriter!
If you’re looking for a peaceful Rakchham homestay, I’d highly recommend this one.
Himachali Dishes That Stole the Show
Now to my favorite part of this Rakchham food and stay review, the food!
Every evening, I had tasty local dishes. Some of the meals I tried included chana madra, maa dal, meetha, pahari dal, matar paneer, and even buransh ki chai. The food reminded me of home; simple, warm, and full of love. Breakfast was just as good. They served things like pancakes, muesli, eggs, poha, and more. The best part? Eating breakfast outside in the sunny yard or 'ताटी' as we say in Himachal.
This was my honest Rakchham homestay review, and I hope it helps someone find a good stay and simple local food in the village.
Bonus Food Stops Beyond Rakchham
Himachal Tourism, Kalpa
While exploring Kalpa, I stumbled upon a charming Himachal Tourism's vintage property. It promises not just a great view but also mouth-watering authentic Himachali cuisine.
Muskan Chinese Food, Reckongpeo
If you enjoy Tibetan or Chinese food, especially Thukpa, you should try Muskan Chinese Food in Reckong Peo. Their noodles are homemade and don’t have those heavy sauces you usually find elsewhere. The food is basic, but honestly, really tasty. I started with a soup and then ordered a full bowl of Thukpa, and it was huge! Most people can’t even finish it. So, if you're ever super hungry while roaming around Peo, this is a great place to stop. I think you’ll really like it.
Choti Wala Dhaba, Rampur Bushahr
On our way back to Shimla, we found Choti Wala Dhaba in Dharali near Rampur Bushahr. It’s a small place, but the food was incredible. They served kinnauri rajma, unpolished rice, makki ki roti, and saag, all with a big spoon of desi ghee. And the lassi? They bring a full jug and even offer refills! Six people can eat here for just ₹500–₹600. Super affordable and full of flavour.
Siya Ram Siddu, Theog
Whether you're visiting or just passing through, you have probably seen the board for Siya Ram Siddu in Theog. If you haven’t stopped there yet, you really should. Their meetha siddus are so good; soft, sweet, and delicious. I also tried their rajma and curry rice, and it was lip smacking. Sometimes, they even make proper Himachali dham, if you're lucky. And it's all super affordable. You get proper, homely food without spending much. Honestly, it’s one of those food stops you remember for a long time.
Still On My List
I couldn’t try everything. I missed out on butter chai and chilta (a Himachali bread made of buckwheat). But I have saved them for my next trip. Can’t wait to go back.
If you liked this article, stay tuned, next up is my experience at #Lata Did Cafe in Soyal village. A peaceful stay, good food, and the charm of an old-world Himachali village. And if you know another great Rakchham homestay I should try, send it my way.
